Our Privacy Policy

The super short version: We only collect what we need to delight you, we will never sell your info, and you can leave at anytime. That's it!

Last updated: August 2026

🤝 Our Promise to You

We're passionate board gamers building tools to delight our community. We hate spam just as much as you do, and we'll never do anything creepy with your information. This policy explains exactly what we do (and don't do) with your data.

✉️ What Information We Collect

We only collect what we actually need:

  • Your email address - So we can send you Board Game Lab updates
  • Your feedback (if you share it) - To make Board Game Lab better
  • Basic website stats - Like which pages people visit. We never tie these to your name or email

🔒 If You Sign In with Google

When you use "Continue with Google," we get your email address and name from Google. That's it - we don't peek at your Google Drive, Gmail, or anything else. We only use this to create your account and send you the updates you asked for.

📬 How We Use Your Information

Here's what we do with your info:

  • Send you Board Game Lab updates (only if you signed up for them)
  • Respond to your questions when you contact us
  • Improve our website using aggregated visitor stats
  • Process purchases if you buy early access (handled securely by Stripe)

What we DON'T do:

  • ❌ Sell your email to anyone
  • ❌ Share your info with advertisers
  • ❌ Send you spam or ads for other companies
  • ❌ Track you around the internet

🌍 Your Rights (Especially for folks who live in the EEA)

You're in control of your data. You can:

  • See what we have - Just ask us
  • Fix anything wrong - We'll update it
  • Delete everything - We'll delete your account when you ask us to. We must keep invoice and transaction records for 10 years, because accounting law requires it — that is the one thing erasure cannot reach
  • Take your data elsewhere - We'll export it for you
  • Withdraw your consent - Unsubscribe anytime using the link in our emails, or reject non-essential cookies

🛡️ How We Protect Your Information

We use industry-standard security (HTTPS, secure tokens, secure payment processing through Stripe). We do our best efforts to enforce security, we follow best practices and work with trusted services.

⏰ How Long We Keep Your Information

We only keep your data as long as needed:

📧 Email address → Until you leave
💬 Contact messages → 1 year
💳 Card details → Never stored (Stripe holds them)
🧾 Transaction records → 10 years (legal accounting duty)
👤 Account data → Until you cancel + 1 year
📊 Analytics cookies → 1 year max
🔐 Login cookies → 30 days
⚙️ Preference cookies → 1 year

💡 Remember: You can ask us to delete your data anytime at support@boardgamelab.com

🍪 Cookies & Tracking

We use minimal tracking:

  • PostHog analytics - To understand how people use our site. Used only if you accepted our cookies banner.
  • Session replay - A recording of how pages looked and where you clicked, so we can see where the site confuses people. Anything you type is masked before it leaves your browser, and nothing is recorded unless you accepted our cookies banner.
  • Essential cookies - To remember if you're signed in
  • No advertising cookies - We don't do ads

🤝 Third-Party Services We Use

We have a GDPR data processing agreement with trusted partners to provide our service. Here's who sees your data and why:

Google (Sign-in)

When you use "Continue with Google", they handle the authentication

Data: Your email and name (only when you choose to sign in with Google)

Privacy Policy

PostHog (Analytics & Session Replay)

Helps us understand how people use our website, including replays of what happened on screen

Data: Page visits, clicks and usage patterns, plus technical data such as your IP address, and a replay of your session with everything you type masked out. We never identify you by name or email — only by a random invitation id.

Privacy Policy

Mailgun (Email Delivery)

Sends our emails (sign-in codes, updates, etc.)

Data: Your email address (temporarily, only when sending emails)

Privacy Policy

Stripe (Payment Processing)

Handles all payment processing securely

Data: Payment information (we never see your card details)

Privacy Policy

Amazon Web Services (Hosting)

Serves the website and stores what it holds

Data: Technical data needed to serve pages, including IP addresses in server logs

Privacy Policy

GDPR Compliance: All our partners follow GDPR regulations and have been carefully vetted for data protection standards.

🌐 Where Your Data Lives

Our servers are in Amazon Web Services' US East (N. Virginia) region, and the other services listed above — PostHog, Stripe, Mailgun and Google — also process data in the United States.

If you are in the EU or the EEA, that means your personal data is transferred outside the EEA. We rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses with each of these providers, and on the EU–US Data Privacy Framework where the provider is certified under it. You can ask us for a copy of the safeguards that apply to you at support@boardgamelab.com.

🔄 Changes to This Policy

If we change anything important, we'll email you about it (if you're subscribed) and update this page. We won't make sneaky changes - we'll be upfront about what's different.

💬 Questions? We'll answer them!

Seriously, if anything in this policy is confusing or you have questions, just email us:

support@boardgamelab.com

We'll answer in plain English, not legalese.
